During the July 23, 2021, episode of SmackDown, commentator Michael Cole revealed that WWE 2K22 would feature a rebuilt game engine and smoother controls this was later confirmed by sources close to 2K. Since then, more details and favorable word of mouth about WWE 2K22 have steadily been flowing. The announcement came nearly a year after 2K Sports canceled a planned WWE 2K21 title.
In May, Visual Concepts creative director Lynell Jinks gave a glimpse at some of the motion capture techniques used to bring WWE Superstars into the game environment.

WWE 2K22 was initially shown in April at the two-night WrestleMania 37 pay-per-view, with a 30-second sample of gameplay video starring fan-favorite luchador Rey Mysterio and a peek at the game’s logo. WWE 2K22 is a professional wrestling sports simulation video game developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports.It is the twenty-second overall installment of the video game series based on WWE, the ninth game under the WWE 2K banner, and the successor to 2019s WWE 2K20. After the cancellation of WWE 2K21 last year, 2K’s mainstream wrestling series is finally returning to the ring, promising that its newest squared circle simulation would “hit different” than the glitch-ridden WWE 2K20. 2K and Visual Concepts have been on their own.
